But for those who aren't on Facebook, it is now available here on YouTube.

Enjoy this extended interview with retired TEAL/Air NZ flight engineer Gary Sommerville (recorded by Paul Brennan on Oct 23rd 2017) about his time on the DC-8 including an experience relating specifically to ZK-NZC.

Douglas DC-8, 5th Pod for shipping spare Pratt & Whitney JT3D engines

On rare occasions, and unfortunately always at the most inopportune time, an engine failure would occur when away from home base.
This necessitated getting a replacement engine to the scene ASAP.

The 5th Pod system consisted of a purpose built pylon which was bolted to the underside of the left wing inboard of No 2 engine to which the spare engine was then attached for shipping.
The event pictured below shows DC-8 ZK-NZE, 8th December 1981, with a replacement engine for the  DC-8 Freighter ZK-NZD which was stranded in Sydney after an engine failure occurred while transporting 24 extremely smelly and unhappy circus lions from Melbourne to New Zealand.

[Thanks to Noel Baker for sharing these photos]

1987 AIR RACE

SINGAPORE - CHRISTCHURCH

Thanks to Don Nicholson for this input.

Basically I came up with the idea and put it up at a fleet meeting. There was a lot of laughter and some said they wanted nothing to do with it.

Jim Woodhams gave me the go ahead and I started getting agreements from engineering, cargo and finally Jim McRae agreed to pay the entry fee if we found the cargo but he would not give the final OK until the last minute.

I got wonderful support from all divisions involved and it was all on. You will read in one article we had to redo all the fuel burns at different altitudes and speeds and that worked a treat.

It was a thrilling ride and we were just a little off taking the top prize. It received huge publicity in the South Island and little in the North.

The Air NZ hangar staff came out and clapped us when we arrived. Pretty moving stuff.

Cheers

Don

ZK-NZD at Christchurch after Air Race

DC-8 ZK-NZD remained in AIR NEW ZEALAND CARGO service until September 26th 1987

During the tough economic period of the early 1980´s it was the only aircraft within the AIR NEW ZEALAND fleet that was actually recording a profit .... despite the airlines reluctance to be engaged in pure freight type operations.

DC-8 ZK-NZD operated AIR NEW ZEALAND's "last ever" DC-8 service between Sydney and Auckland .... concluding 21 years of highly successful DC-8 operations.

This final flight was crewed by Captain Jim WOODHAMS, F/O Captain Bob TARR, and F/E Don NICHOLSON.

The aircraft was immediately withdrawn from service and remained in storage at the AIR NEW ZEALAND jet base, at Auckland International Airport, until its sale to KALITTA/AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AIRWAYS on September 1st 1989 .... and at which time it was stripped of its AIR NEW ZEALAND titles prior to being re-registered N806CK and departing New Zealand for its new career in the USA ....

A long forgotten memento that I couldn’t resist including -the FEs equivalent of a POH ( pat on head). Rarely seen!!!

Hi  Len

One or two things you might like for your DC8 coverage.

ZK-NZD’s last flight was 26 September 1987 from Sydney to Auckland.

Some sites have it as BNE-AKL. Air NZs management system to me shows we went  AKL-BNE-SYD the day before ..

Captains Jim Woodhams and Bob Tarr were the pilots and I was the FE.

We did a max speed low run from the west. There was a large crowd to greet us and Robin Campbell said he thought we were going to turn left and head for Pikes Point dump!

The official excuse for shutting down the DC-8 freighter operation was that Air New Zealand required all the pilots for the B767.

All the freighter crews were there and I think we then went to a pub in Mangere for refreshments.

Almost two years later on September 1, 1989 she was sold to Kalitta for $NZ8.3 million.

Cheers

Don

A somewhat rare colour photo of ZK-NZB

DC-8 ZK-NZB Crash Auckland International Airport Mangere

July 4th 1966

Disaster occurred on the afternoon of July 4th 1966.

DC8 ZK-NZB was written-off during a crew training flight at Auckland International Airport. (having accumulated only 2,275 hrs total flying time since delivery)

The aircraft was performing a series of touch and go landings during which simulated failed engine procedures were being rehearsed.

The accident occurred when the check captain retarded the # 4 engine throttle by rapidly pulling back using the spoiler cancel knob moments after lift-off. This generated forces that suddenly caused the associated thrust brake lever to rise and enter the reverse idle detent.

With insufficient altitude and only minimum control airspeed available immediately after rotation, recovery action was impossible before the aircraft banked and side slipped uncontrollably, impacting the ground about its starboard wingtip, then cart wheeling and disintegrating for several hundred yards along the main taxiway and before a terminal full of shocked witnesses.

2 of the 5-man crew aboard the aircraft were killed in the accident…..

Captain Don McLachlan and Flight Engineer Gordon Tonkin.

This tragic event highlighted a potentially fatal flaw with the DC8 throttle and reverse thrust control system which had not previously been encountered during developmental/flight testing of the aircraft
